OUR SERVICES

Pet Services - WellnessAlternative Therapies

Because we feel these methods can be an important compliment to traditional wellness and illness treatment plans, we are pleased to offer acupuncture, Chinese herbals and canine massage.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has become more common in veterinary medicine over the last few years.  One of the primary reasons is that it works well for treating many conditions we commonly see in our pets.  Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with most traditional medications and treatments.  The goal of acupuncture is not only to make your pet feel better, but to decrease the amount of other medications needed.

Many diseases and conditions respond to acupuncture.  Some of the more common conditions we treat are:
Arthritis pain – young and old animals,
Back problems – including disk disease,
Geriatric Problems – pain, weakness, lack of energy, decreased appetite,
Chronic Renal Failure
Cancer – slow cancer growth, help with side-effects of chemotherapy,
Immune system – can help strengthen a weak immune system
Post – surgical care

 Herbals, Supplements, and Diet Change

Other treatments which can be used in conjunction with the acupuncture are herbals, supplements, and diet changes.  Chinese Herbal Formulations may be prescribed by Dr. Vavra.  These work in the same way as medications but have very few side effects and can have long-lasting benefits for your pet.  Most conditions respond best to a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbals.  It is important that herbals be prescribed by a veterinarian who has the knowledge to do this correctly and has a safe, reliable source of the herbals.  Please do not try to treat your pet with Chinese herbals (or ANY product) you find online or hear about from other sources.  Herbals are prescribed based on the INDIVIDUAL pet and the medical condition, not just the medical condition.  An herbal which works for one animal may not work for another with the same problem.

Many other supplements could be recommended for your pet depending on the condition.  Dr. Vavra will also discuss your pet’s diet since this is the most important aspect of your pet’s health.  Dr. Zimmerman can also provide you with many supplements and dietary suggestions.

Canine Massage

Canine massage is also an area of growing awareness as the true benefits are realized.  Some of the many benefits include:  increased circulation of blood, lymph and oxygen, muscle stimulation, enhanced flexibility, relief from muscle stiffness and help with post-surgical healing.  Many dogs that are either athletes or have arthritis, recent injuries, recent surgeries or decreased range of motion will find relief from massage therapy.
